A Memorial Scholarship
With assistance from the St. Clair County Teachers Scholarship, Dorothy was able to receive support for her studies leading to a bachelor of science in 1972 and a master of science in 1983, both in Elementary Education from SIUE. Dorothy pursued both degrees after raising her family.
"My husband, Art, shared my appreciation and support for education," Dorothy said. "Now, through the new Metz Scholarship, I would like to encourage graduates of Dupo High School to pursue their career in the same way I was supported when I received the Teachers Scholarship. Also, my three children graduated from Valmeyer (IL) High School and I would like to give Valmeyer graduates an opportunity for a scholarship if there are no qualified applications among the graduates of Dupo High."
Dorothy said "the scholarship I received provided essential support to me as I pursued my education at SIUE. I would like to assist others who have performed well academically as a way of returning the favor."
Recently, Dorothy transfered additional funds to the SIUE Foundation to create a charitable gift annuity. The eventual proceeds from the gift annuity will go to the Arthur Frank and Dorothy J. Edwards Metz Scholarship Fund. The annuity is providing Dorothy with a high annual income of 8 percent in quarterly payments for the rest of her life, which is much more than she was getting through her bank certificate of deposit. "This is a real win-win situation," Metz said. "It gives me the joy of knowing that the Metz Scholarship Fund will more than double with the addition of the proceeds from my charitable gift annuity at the end of my life, while I enjoy the important benefit of increased income now."
